While the Senate and the President head for a showdown on embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding, we must ask: Is this battle necessary?
The promising advances in medical treatments are being made with adult stem cells. Today an announcement was made that Type I diabetes patients have stopped using insulin for three years -- thanks to a treatment with adult stem cells from their own blood.
Why can't the Democrats and Republicans join together to fund research in adult stem cells and umbilical cord blood stem cells? These are the areas yielding results. They also avoid the ethical problem of destroying newly conceived babies.
The answer is two fold. First, the Democrats want a political issue with which to club the Republicans. They spin Republican opposition to ESCR as opposition to curing people. Second, pro-abortion supporters must push ESCR because it supports the dehumanization of newly conceived babies -- something needed to continue support for abortion.
By focusing on a showdown over ESCR the Democrats are callously ignoring promising treatments from other stem cell types -- all for political advantage.
