"Stick a fork in it, it's done" may be the judgement about the McCain campaign. After a staff shake up, staff reduction and additional staff defections, the good Senator is narrowing his focus to the early state primaries.
McCain is an average of 13 percentage points behind Giuliani and almost 4 points behind Thompson. His fundraising slowed by $2 million in the second quarter and he only had $2 million on hand. Meanwhile, Giuliani's fundraising amounts increased $2 million.
McCain also has lost the status of media darling he held in the previous campaign. The "Straight Talk Express" of 2000 now appears to be sputtering and misfiring -- probably because McCain has never been as popular in the Republican party as he once was in the press.
