Campaign Fatigue?

Has campaign fatigue set in -- already? I admit to a passion for politics -- and religion -- the two things you don't discuss in "polite company." But I am feeling a decided lack of passion with the current campaign.

Is it simply the end of summer? I look at the headlines, but nothing provokes a comment. I search the news, trying to find something to blog about. Alas, nothing excites.

Has the interest in Fred Thompson's potential run worn off? Yes.

Does Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney interest me? No. I don't even pay attention to them any more.

Do the gaffes that reveal Barak Obama's inexperience still provoke laughter? No. I've come to expect a lack of depth in the man.

Does Hillary provoke anything? Nope, she's so predictable --  a Democrat with a cloaking device on her liberalism.

Even debate questions from a snowman is boring.

Why did they have to start this so early?

On Mother Teresa's Struggle

The recent publication of Mother Teresa's private letters reveals she struggled for years with sensing the presence of God in her life. Though this fact may lead some to ridicule her, my respect has grown.

To see the sacrificial service Mother Teresa gave to the poor causes wonder. What motivated her? Rather than flowing from a sublime mystical experience of God's presence, it now seems apparent her action flowed from a heart parched dry by the lack of spiritual experience. What faith to remain so dedicated when even the spiritual experiences were so meager!

Many today serve God because if feels good. They seek a church with a good "worship experience." They chase "spiritual highs." Many are the spiritual equivalent of teenagers -- acting correctly only when they feel like it. Has the biblical concept of faith been lost?

Job is not remembered because he experienced ecstasy. His is the story of faithfulness in the midst of grief, suffering and loss. Though he questioned why he experienced such pain, he never cursed or rejected God. The faithful listed in Hebrews 11 are honored because they continued to serve God even though they experienced challenges, trials and death.

The fact that Mother Teresa struggled spiritually and yet remained true to her service to God makes her life all the more remarkable. Her example challenges us to serve God regardless of the "spiritual high" we may experience.

Seeking Firm Action on Illegal Aliens

A Senator is calling for firm action on illegal aliens. No, not a U.S. Senator, a Mexican Senator.

And no, not action to stop illegal aliens, but action to support their access to the U.S. Repeat offender (previously deported) illegal alien Elvira Arellano has been deported again. To which Mexican Sen. Humberto Zazue declared, "We cannot remain quiet in view of this injustice and must ask for firm action from our authorities."

According to Arellano, the U.S. is to blame for "letting people cross over without papers." Yes, Elvira, we have a problem. No, Elvira, the problem is not the U.S. breaking the law. The problem is the U.S. failing to enforce the law. You, Elvira, have repeatedly broken our laws.

No, Senator Zazue, deporting Arellano is not an injustice. It is a just action taken by our authorities -- regardless of their motives. I hope your grandstanding leads to your reelection in Mexico, Senator, because any U.S. Congressman who takes sympathetic action will be targeted by an outraged electorate.

Fox News Childishness

Fox News is under attack again.

Some claim Fox News is a powerful ideological force whose media drumbeat led us to war in Iraq. Yet the same people never charge the New York Times, Washington Post, Dan Rather or numerous others with ideological ax grinding. They also applaud the use of YouTube in a Presidential Debate while supporting the boycot of a Fox News sponsored debate by liberal candidates.

The same people who worship free speech loath and fear free speech that disagrees with them.

Why the angst over Fox News? Perhaps it is the same reason children stick fingers in their ears and scream "I can't hear you!" -- emotional immaturity.

Another reason, in the political and ideological contest waged by and through the media, some try to prevent others from speaking at all. If one can't refute the ideas or challenges another might pose, silence them! Portray them as bigots! Assault their motives! -- Whatever you do, don't let them speak or anyone listen to them!

"Grandpa Fred" Lazy?

A post at the Daily Kos implies Fred Thompson is lazy. Calling him "Grandpa Fred," it quotes another post about the legislative legacy of Thompson vs. McCain. Since McCain sponsored 870 bills during the same time Thompson sponsored 167, it concludes Thompson is old and lazy.

Typical -- the Left is the party of big government. The more government, the better. That's right -- raise taxes, pass more laws, increase the bureaucracy! Anyone not sponsoring numerous bills must be a dolt!

Wait a minute... I see a different explanation -- common sense. The real sign of maturity is the wisdom and discipline that limits government.

The more government has, the less we have. The more its power (laws passed), the less our freedom. The higher the tax rates, the less for our standard of living.

I'll be quite comfortable supporting a candidate of less government... because it means more for you and me.

America's Spirit: Steel or Putty?

A commercial for a sports drink asks, "Is it in you?" A similar question needs to be asked of the spirit in today's Americans. Do we have the American spirit? Do we have a backbone of steel or putty?

The American colonists had a resolute spirit. They were willing to sacrifice, fight and die for freedom. As Patrick Henry cried, "Give me liberty or give me death!" This spirit propelled them to victory in the face of discouragements, defeats and winter hardships. Does it remain in our people? Is it in you?

Tyrants and intimidators will always surface in history, just like playgrounds often reveal bullies. Appeasement and accomodation leads to further outrage. Eventually, one must take a stand against aggressors. This is true of ideological as well as physical aggressors.

Social liberals and Islamists currently use the same tactics to advance their goals. They feign outrage and position ideological opponents as "bigots" in the public's mind. Their first task is to silence the opposition, to squelch the free exchange of ideas. They use legal intimidation (law suits) and vitriol. When their opponents lose the courage to speak out, they win another battle. They often enjoy the willing assistance of the media professionals who have replaced loyalty to our nation with loyalty to a warped, valueless ethical system.

Most Americans want to live quiet lives and mind their own business. We are willing to accomodate others. We may roll our eyes at the complaintants' hypersensitivity, but we want to get along with others. So we allow the own manipulation by accepting the false guilt thrust upon us. We are slow to realize we're dealing with bullies who will make incrementally larger demands until stopped.

But the time has come to take a stand, to speak out, to risk ridicule and more. Whether hate crimes legislation, leftist social experiments, Islamist suits against airline passengers reporting strange behavior -- whatever the issue -- we must not be cowed. We must realized we're being dissed and square off.

A recent post* on another blog quotes a Cheyenne proverb, "A nation is never conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground." Where is your heart? Looking down or staring defiantly into the eyes of the aggressors?

The American spirit refuses to be intimidated. Is it in you?

Hording Cats and Democrats

Periodically, a local newspaper somewhere carries a story about someone with too many pets -- like 100 cats or 30 dogs. The animals are in poor health, often in squalid conditions. What causes someone to horde animals? Perhaps it is too much compassion or too little common sense.

I really think it is false compassion. Rather than seeing the real condition of the animals, animal horders are feeding their own emotional needs. They enjoy feeling compassionate. They avoid the pain of tough decisions. Their so-called "compassion" for the animals leads to mistreatment of the animals.

The progressive (aka liberal) tendencies in the Democratic party have the same problem. Many of their policies feed their emotional need. They want to feel compassionate -- that they "care." This false compassion motivates action that eventually lowers conditions for those "cared for." We've seen this in the War on Poverty and it permeates the current efforts to extend health care entitlements.

Unfortunately, like animal hording, the problem usually grows into a large smelly mess before the community decides to take charge and clean things up.

Oh Boy, Obama!

The strange taste in Barak Obama's mouth is shoe leather -- though he may not know it. Obama made still another foreign policy gaffe Monday. He said we were "air raiding villages and killing civilians." Watch it here.

I suppose his previous announcement about invading Pakistan would have used massive deployments of troops without harming a civilian!

The evidence says Obama has unrealistic notions about foreign policy and military action.

Sun Burn for Global Warming Devotees

Bill Stiegerwald's latest column, The Sun, Stupid should raise the temperature of global warming devotees. No, the burn won't be from a warmer globe, but from seeing cherished beliefs roasted by simple facts. Don't miss it.

Have you ever been sunburned? If so, you'll get the point.

The Democrat Attitude Toward Rules

House Democrats recently revealed the party's attitude toward rules. When the gavel fell on a vote to send the 2008 Agriculture spending bill back to committee, the Republicans had 215 votes to the Democrat's 213. Then the vote board blinked off, the Democrats "reopened" the vote and declared a 214 vote tie, the record of the vote was "lost" and other shenanigans occurred. Turmoil and outrage erupted. Even the NYT reported that the Republicans had won the vote.

During the brouhaha, Majority Leader Hoyer declared, "We control this House, not the parliamentarians!"

Note the attitude --
rules must never get in the way of Democrat control.

This attitude echoes the maneuvering of the Democratic party over the election of 2000. The Democrats were unwilling to accept the outcome of the election and sought a recount and to suppress the military vote in Florida. In St. Louis they had held the vote open past the deadline and instigated other irregularities in the vote. Again,
rules must never get in the way of Democrat control.

This attitude extends to the Constitution of the United States. By viewing it as a living document, and opposing Supreme Court nominees who have a proper respect for the Constitution, the Democrats have successfully altered the legal environment on issues they lacked the votes to enact.

Just remember the real outcome. As a republic, the ultimate authority should reside in the citizens. The rules are for us. We elect representatives by the rules. They are subject to the rules. When political leaders break the rules, they revolt against the citizens.

So when the Democrats break the rules, what they really declare is: Citizens must never get in the way of Democrat control

Obama, Nukes and Poetry

Barak Obama's most recent gaffe about nuclear weapons sparked the following poem:

Obama, listen to your mama,
Be careful what you say!
"No nuclear attacks!"
"Uh, let me rephrase that..."
"Uh, involving civilians..."

Obama, listen to your mama,
Be careful what you say!
"Nukes aren't on the table."
"No discussion is able..."
"Hey! I've raised millions!"

Obama, listen to your mama,
Be careful what you say!
Before you get pilloried,
stop and listen to Hillary!
Just sit back on your pillion!

Obama the Conqueror

Barak Hussein Obama, if elected President of the United States, may go down in history as Obama the Conqueror. Forget George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq. Obama wants to invade Pakistan.

Many say he is naive in foreign policy. He may also be naive in politics. How will the left wing anti-war crowd respond to this statement?

But then again, perhaps he is a great military commander! (sarcasm alert) Obviously Bush knew nothing when he invaded mountainous Afghanistan or the relatively flat Iraqi country side. Barak must really know how to invade if he wants to go into rugged Pakistan. And he must be a great diplomat since he threatens to invade an ally.

Or, maybe this is all a flurry of words by a politician who has no intention of ever committing troops anywhere.

Or, maybe this is a flurry of words by a politician who would foolishly commit troops and destroy alliances.

Or what? Add your comments. I'd love to know what you think.

Close the Net or Elton John?

Elton John recently declared his desire to close down the internet. Sure, he is a multimillionaire musician who detests illegal downloading of his songs. And yes, his latest album had very anemic sales. But these are not the stated reasons.

Sir Elton is concerned with the way the web is used in the making of music. He wants to close it to encourage art. "I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span," he says.

As my daughter says, "Shut down the web. Maybe there'd be no Elton John music. Maybe no Elton John 'art.'"

Hmmm... to paraphrase another Brit, imagine...
