Clinton-Obama vs. Thompson-Gingrich?

Could the tickets in the '08 campaign be Clinton-Obama vs. Thompson-Gingrich? Wouldn't that be fun?!

First, is it possible? Gingrich is predicting the Democratic ticket, though it remains to be seen if Hillary and Barak could work together. I agree this is the Democrats' best chance. On the Republican side, several signs exist of a coming alliance of Thompson and Gingrich. Although I'm not sure this is the best possible ticket, it would draw my enthusiasm.

Now, would it be fun? You bet! Think of the hatred that could be expended! Though Gingrich has been out of the main stream for a while, the Left would have a replacement for Cheney -- someone to detest. On the Right, Hillary would rightly draw criticism for her liberalism.

This match up also provides someone to love. True, the feminists would love Hillary, but I was thinking of Obama. The Left could gush and congratulate themselves. How PC they could feel! Meanwhile, conservatives could love Thompson's persona and positions.

Think of the debate match ups! The brittle, prickly Senator from New York against the warm, friendly former Senator from Tennessee. Hillary, with strident voice, would attack. Thompson would parry and thrust with humor. Who do you think people would like the most?

In the Vice Presidential debate, Gingrich would slice and dice the vague and inexperienced Senator from Illinois. Obama's only advantage would be to limit the damage by participating in a single debate.

Stay tuned...

Are You a Hall of Fame Player?

Cal Ripken, Jr.'s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame leads me to ask, "Are you a Hall of Fame Player?"

Ripken displayed a tremendous work ethic during a long career. He worked hard to prepare. He showed up game after game -- longer than any other player in baseball history. He redefined the position of shortstop. These qualities have earned him a place in Cooperstown.

In the game of citizenship, what kind of player are you? Do you prepare for elections -- researching candidates and positions? Do you show up election after election to vote and persuade others? Are you redefining the position with community involvement and activism?

Cal challenges us all.

Congress: NOT "Do Nothing"

Those charging the Democrat-led Congress has done nothing are wrong.

Sure, they haven't passed appropriations bills. OK -- so they haven't addressed Social Security or other entitlement problems either. I'll concede that they've shown no leadership in the war. But nothing?

Come on! The Democrats have launched numerous investigations! They shouted a multitude of allegations!

What did you expect? Did you really believe their promises? Did you really believe they value leading the country or doing the work or government more than they value getting even with Bush?

Too Much Cleavage to be Conservative

Reasons Fred Thompson Isn't a Conservative

The posts on a CNN blog are very entertaining! The story starts with a report on a woman who asked Fred a question and apparently interrupted his answer. I watched the woman's video. She was no more intrusive than regular journalists. Yet she gets manhandled by police, apparently at the request of someone with Thompson's organization -- or else mainstream media folks who wanted her out of the front and center spot. (CNN's clip that accompanies the article is also instructive on the way they edit video.)

In her questions, she claims Thompson is not a conservative because he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. The blog posts that follow include many other "reasons" as well as some real points.

Here's some of the so-called reasons Fred isn't conservative* (all quotes from the posts):
1 He’s a sell-out that only cares about money and power.    by Will
2 He managed Mccains 2000 campaign.
3 He is an internationalist.
4 He is quite anti gun.
5 He was pro MCCAIN-Feingold.
6 His wife dresses like a hollywood celebrity, exposing tons of cleavage. 2-6 by Neil Fass
7 The guy married a chick 20 years younger (trophy wife) by JLE
8 subscribe[s] to the neo-con perpetual war doctrine   by Bryan
9 You wouldn’t hire the guy does the voice of Homer Simpson to work at your nuclear power plant and you wouldn’t Bill Cosby to be your doctor, so WHY would you let Fred Thompson be your President? by Dave

Wow! Bad voice, young wife, wife's style of dress!

*Please note, some allegations above may be false and not all were offered as "reasons" but as criticisms.

One final note...
On the serious side, the posts indicate that the North American Union/Community and NAFTA are issues that will need to be answered by candidates in the primaries. I suspect they may piggy back onto the immigration issue.

When America Falls, Who Leads?

Thomas Sowell asks if the United States has become morally paralyzed. Which raises other questions.

Sowell examines France at the beginning of WWII -- militarily superior to Germany but lacking the will to stop Hitler. He concludes by asking if the U.S. has become the new France in the face down with Iran.

In WWII, when France and the rest of Europe fell and Germany was attacked, an industrial nation, with a large population -- the U.S. -- made the difference for the Allies. So, if we cast ourselves in the role of France, who will save us?

When you look for industrialized nations, that could mobilize large forces, that would not face an Islamic insurgency and -- most importantly -- would be willing to fight beside us, the list is rather thin. I can't think of one. Can you?

Hillary Is Right

Hillary is right about one thing -- Barak Obama's willingness to meet with leaders of antagonistic countries without preconditions is "irresponsible and frankly naive." She rightly highlights Obama's lack of experience, dare we say "lack of wisdom"?

Though Hillary is right, that doesn't mean she is a better choice...

Christian "Terror" in MO

Last night in St. Charles County, MO,  40 to 50 people of all ages engaged in activities that frighten many on the political Left. Two small buses and two vans rolled up to the old county courthouse. The families unloaded and gathered on the lawn -- and prayed.

No, this was not an event staged for the media. No signs were carried. No reporters or broadcast trucks were present. The only pictures snapped were for personal momentos and church publications.

Also surprising, the conservative Christians prayed for all government officials -- even the liberal officials. They prayed for local, county, state and national government. They asked God to bless the functioning of government and to use it to provide justice.

As frightening as these events are to the Left, a different activity that should cause deep concern was also urged. Besides praying, these Christians were encouraged to vote.

McCain Ready for the Fork?

"Stick a fork in it, it's done" may be the judgement about the McCain campaign. After a staff shake up, staff reduction and additional staff defections, the good Senator is narrowing his focus to the early state primaries.

McCain is an average of 13 percentage points behind Giuliani and almost 4 points behind Thompson. His fundraising slowed by $2 million in the second quarter and he only had $2 million on hand. Meanwhile, Giuliani's fundraising amounts increased $2 million.

McCain also has lost the status of media darling he held in the previous campaign. The "Straight Talk Express" of 2000 now appears to be sputtering and misfiring -- probably because McCain has never been as popular in the Republican party as he once was in the press.

Stupid Criminals, Stupid Politicians

I chuckle at the stupid criminals in the news. The local afternoon drive time radio host regularly features these stories. A recent Readers Digest included a story of a teen who stuck a stolen gun down his waistband and shot himself in a sensitive place. The idiocy of criminals is entertaining!

Politicians also do stupid things. Like a New Jersey senator who wants to make it illegal to sell or give anyone under 18 to a toy gun. Talk about meddlesome big government!

Perhaps we should have regular features in the media about "stupid politicians in the news." Oh, wait...that pretty much covers what we have now.

Except no one is laughing...

New Moral Majority?

An article in Time says the Democrats may be the new Moral Majority because of their efforts to appeal to religious voters:

'The Democrats are so fired up, you could call them the new Moral Majority. This time, however, the emphasis is as much on the majority as on the morality as they try to frame a message in terms of broadly shared values that don't alarm members of minority religions or secular voters. It has become an article of faith among party leaders that it was sheer strategic stupidity to cede the values debate to Republicans for so long; that most people want to reduce abortion but not criminalize it, protect the earth instead of the auto industry, raise up the least among us; and that a lot of voters care as much about the candidates' principles as about their policies. "What we're seeing," says strategist Mike McCurry, "is a Great Awakening in the Democratic Party." '

Ha! The Democrats will try to claim "majority" but their claims of "moral" will be mocked until the following happens -- at least!

-- They hold their politicians to high standards, like the values voters on the Republican side. Democrats decry sleazy ethics on the Republican side of the aisle and ignore it on theirs.

-- They adopt pro-life actions. Most Democrat politicians are stridently pro-abortion, or they talk a good game about "safe, legal and rare" and do nothing to reduce abortions.

-- They actually talk about their faith without consulting PR firms and other consultants to craft the message first.

Diagnosis: Politics (As Usual)

Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona accuses the Bush administration of politcizing health care policy.

"Carmona said Tuesday that senior administration officials and political appointees vetted and censored his speeches, would not let him speak freely with reporters, attempted to insert political phrases and candidates' names, tried to get him to appear in uniform — Carmona was a vice admiral — at political events, and told him to follow administration policy instead of science. "[source]

Sounds like a normal diagnosis to me. Government is about politics, and politics affect government policies.  Hillary Care was spawned by left-wing politics -- and rejected as such.
Just who does Carmona think he worked for?

Hillary to Win, Then Lose

Analysis in an election year is abundant. The analysis from Hillary's camp is that she will win. She's pulling the numbers now that other Democratic nominees have had in the past.

So...if Hillary wins the nomination, she'll lose the general election -- according to analysis from a veteran Republican. Hillary will mobilize a large Republican turnout.

Don't worry -- more analysis from all camps will follow...

Everyone Needs an Apocalypse or a Live Earth Concert

The Live Earth concerts highlight a profound truth -- everyone needs an apocalypse. Or, more precisely, everyone needs a world view that includes a purpose and a threat.

Christianity, Judaism and Islam all have an "end of the world" belief. And all provide a sense of purpose for the individual and the community. In the modern world, as many abandon traditional beliefs, they find the need to believe in something. Even Eastern religions provide an explanation of the place of mankind in the scheme of things.

The environmentalism of Live Earth and global warming -- all provide a set of beliefs that provides a purpose and an apocalyptic threat. For many, it provides a core belief that can't be questioned. For others, it provides a motivation that can be tapped to bring others to action -- whether for political action or sales.

Science tells us the Earth has warmed a bit. It tells us that the Earth has experienced warming/cooling cycles in the past. But the scientific evidence supports non-human causes like variation in the Sun's output, to name one. It is the environmental faith that claims a crisis looms, that man is the cause and mankind must "repent."

Though environmentalism doesn't necessarily posit a deity, it echoes the belief in a Creator. It simply replaces the Creator with the creation. All proving once again that human beings are religious creatures. Hmm... what does that prove?

Agonizing Choices in '08

As a conservative, what choices in the primaries and election would cause me the most angst?

The Current Republican Choices
If my choices are limited to the current, official slate of Republicans, I would be trapped into a choice of heart against head. Would I support Romney because my head thinks he has the greatest chance and is more conservative, even though my heart is not excited? Or, would I support Huckabee, who has impressed me, even while my head whispers, "He has no chance"?

I would not support McCain -- the heart is repulsed by his past opportunism. And my head warns loudly. Although Bush has handled the current political situation poorly, I easily think McCain would be worse in similar circumstances. Let's face it, we are most likely to have a narrowly divided Congress or a Democratic one if McCain wins.

Giuliani is also out. Both heart and head are continually suspicious his liberal core will do bad things as President, despite his assurances.

Thankfully, I will be saved from this dilemma by the entrance of Fred Thompson. But it may set up a different agony.

The Potential Republican Choices
My heart likes Fred. My head also likes Fred because many voters will like him. He can communicate complex things simply and with wit. HIs conservatism is solid. So what's the problem?

Newt is the problem. If Gingrich enters the race, I'll be faced with another heart vs. head dilemma. I am enthused by Newt's ideas and energy. He is younger-looking than Fred, and may attract younger voters. But my head says his negatives are too high to win the general election. I may have to go with Fred, even though I like Newt -- unless Newt shows good traction...

The "Stinky" Choices
What about a general election without Fred or Newt? If you take the current slate of Republicans and compare them to Obama and Hillary, what happens?

Well, if it is Hillary, I'll vote Republican any day. Even McCain is better than either Clinton. But McCain versus Obama? Talk about holding your nose to vote Republican! (The analysts will say that McCain and Hillary have strong emotional negatives with me while Obama does not.) I would have a similar reaction to Giuliani on the ticket. Oh, my head would lead me to vote Republican, but my heart would be disgusted.

So, it looks like the most exciting election choice for me would be a surging Thompson, or -- against the odds -- a highly popular Newt. Lacking either, Romney is the most acceptable of the likely remaining choices.
