The American Spirit of Independence

Terrorists, the 4th and False Ideas of Freedom

America was founded by rebellion against tyranny – a government that trampled the God-given rights of people. Though some find it fashionable to honor rebellion against God, morality or any authority, the American spirit began as a principled rebellion against abusive government.

Many today have lost this spirit. They enshrine a false idea of personal freedom. This self-centered ideology declares that individuals are free to define their own ethics and rewrite the values and institutions of society. They submit to no rules but their own.

In contrast the signers of the Declaration of Independence recognized the authority of “Nature’s God” and held a “decent respect to the opinions of mankind.” They sought to protect society, not rewrite its values. They saw themselves as a community – a people – united in the purpose of protecting the rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

These first Americans were possessed with a spirit of sacrifice for the common good. The signers of 1776 declared, “…with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Each fought for the people, not simply for self. This same spirit flows through the men and women who don uniforms today – whether military, police or emergency services. It stirs us all to serve and protect our communities and nation.

Today, Islamic terrorists seek to subject us to political and religious tyranny far worse than the American colonists faced from Britain. They will be defeated – not because our weapons are strong, but because our will is strong.

The American spirit of independence knows nothing of surrender. Echoes from history like “I have not yet begun to fight!” and “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” burn in our hearts. Remembering the Alamo and Pearl Harbor heightened our determination. Like the explosion of fireworks, this spirit bursts forth in glorious and fierce defiance against the enemies of our freedom.

Remember, 9/11…

Savvy Brits and Global Warming

Savvy Brits think that the global warming hype is fueled by a desire for money. Hmm...I wonder how much Al Gore has made selling hysteria?

The Brits also think "dog mess" is a more serious problem than global warming! Of course, some of the hyperbole seems like so much "dog mess"...

Dick Who?

Dick Armey? Why is that name vaguely familiar? Oh, yeah -- he's a Republican "once was" politician who has a bitter streak focused on Dr. James Dobson and Christian Conservatives.  And, he hasn't got a clue...

Armey recently
commented on Dobson in an article about Newt Gingrich:

"My own view of the troubles of the Republican Party is that there have been many times over the years that Republicans have gotten themselves in trouble with the electorate by trying to make the Jim Dobsons of the world happy. But it isn't possible to make Jim Dobson happy. His occupation is not to be happy....I doubt very much that Dobson can control all the votes even in his own family, let alone hundreds of thousands of votes."

Hmm...Dobson has a radio audience far bigger than Armey's old Congressional district, the majority of whom are Christian soccer moms. Then there's the Focus on the Family media empire -- books, magazines, web, videos. The Left has long pouted over and refused to report the popularity of Dobson's books and radio show -- and Armey follows suit.

Newt -- always the man seeing the big picture -- saw the enormous political gain of appearing on Dobson's show. Meanwhile, Armey stupidly plays out his bitterness, never understanding the damage he inflicts on his political career.

Pet Rocks and iPhones

Apple and its marketing gurus must consider me a Neanderthal, deficient in "fashion savvy." Why? Because I did not wait in line to buy an iPhone. I do not have any iPhone envy. In fact, I strongly suspect those who purchased iPhones were subject to price gouging.

Maybe this is why I don't work in marketing. Since I fail to experience the emotions of a fad, I can never position products and services to leverage other's "fad envy."

At least the iPhone isn't a Pet Rock. For those of you too young to remember, Pet Rocks were the fad shortly after the Smiley Face fad. People purchased little boxes that held a rock that fit comfortably into the palm of your hand. They were positioned as a "pet." I think you even got a bit of plastic Easter-egg grass in the box. It was a cheap conversation piece, but totally useless.

My deficiency of faddishness has limited retailers profits and impacted the economy. But I feel no guilt. We who seem "deficient" to Madison Avenue know we really have an abundance...of common sense.

Why Fred Thompson Will Be A Great Candidate

Fred Thompson will be a great candidate because he can communicate well. He can take a complex issue,  explain it and persuade others in a simple, folksy style. Here's an example on health care.

Environmentalists Oppose Global Warming Prevention

If global warming is a serious threat, wouldn't any effort to combat it be welcome? One would think so, but not all solutions are accepted -- only solutions that are "ideologically blessed" by the environmentalists who believe in global warming.

For example, cutting carbon emissions from autos and factories is fine -- probably because it restricts industrialization and mainly impacts people. But stimulating the growth of phytoplankton in the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide is not acceptable -- because it would allegedly impact animal species. Even though it would help restore nutrients and phytoplankton levels in the ocean, it is opposed by some environmental groups.

I guess an ideologically correct "crisis" requires an ideologically correct solution...

Sanctions on Iran -- NOW!

Timing is everything -- in business, boxing and politics. And now is the time to ratchet up the call for sanctions against Iran to pressure an end to their nuclear ambitions. Consider the fact that Iran imports 40% of their gasoline.

Reuters
reports: "Angry Iranian motorists queued for gasoline on Wednesday hours after the world's fourth largest oil exporter imposed fuel rationing, sparking chaotic scenes and the torching of two pump stations in the capital."

Time to squeeze...

Lott and Feinstein -- What's the Difference?

Trent Lott smirked and soft pedaled his disdain for the American voter today -- related to his "talk radio running America" comment -- appearing on Fox News Sunday. Boy! I wish he were from MO -- I'd relish expressing a bit of disdain at the ballot box! (Listen up, Bond!)

The immigration bill is a bait-and-switch measure. Promises of enforcement and border security are offered but the goal is amnesty and rewarding law-breakers with expedited citizenship.

Also appearing on Fox -- Sen. Feinstein who "is looking at" reviving the Fairness Doctrine because she feels talk radio is "overwhelmingly one way."  Diane, would you have slapped this on Thomas Paine for publishing "Common Sense"? Will you inject "fairness" into the blogosphere? Admit it -- you're really upset by free speech that disagrees with you.

Thompson - Huckabee 08

Does a govenor and a senator make a winning ticket? What if one is from Tennessee and the other from Arkansas?

That combination worked for Clinton - Gore. Would it work for Thompson - Huckabee?

The thought intrigues me. I thought Huckabee handle himself well in the debates. However, he isn't getting any traction as a Presidential candidate. But maybe as a Veep...

I'll admit that I like Newt. However, I think he has too much residual negatives to make a successful run for President and probably would carry too much drag as a Veep.

However, Huckabee and Thompson both have low negatives.  Just thinking...

Global Warming Fries Another Brain

Global warming is causing mental disfunction. The actual temperature is not the issue. The global warming ideology warps the mind. The latest victim is UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who claims the genocide in Darfur is caused in part by global warming.

Global warming is the latest fad. People will blame it for everything -- even while scientist debate its extent, cause and effects. Will global warming be blamed for low birth weight babies, impotency, increases in cancer and the St. Louis Cardinals poor performance? (Something is definitely wrong with the Cards!)

People overheated about global warming need a splash of cold water!

Trent Lott Doesn't Get It

Trent Lott recently said, "Talk radio is running America" in relation to the public's opposition to the immigration bill.

Come on, Trent! Talk radio and bloggers run America!

Trent actually said "Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.” He also said "younger guys" are "huffing and puffing against the bill."

This comment reveals the disdain that is felt in Washington for people like you and I. They just don't understand the depth of opposition that exists to amnesty. Hey, Senators! Go ahead and think the electorate are a bunch of ignorant yokels following the siren call of conservative talk radio -- you'll feel better when you are  voted from office!

Seal the border! Enforce existing law! End bait and switch tactics on immigration!

Great Quotes From Politicians

Here's a few quotes from the news. Enjoy! (I did!)

"The thing you always need to remember when Democrat politicians talk is that they're lying. " -- Tom Delay

"Remember, the only Democrat to be elected twice to the presidency since World War II was an almost pathological liar. To many leading Democrats these days, that's not an indictment, it's advice. " -- Tom Delay  both quotes here

"I often say after eight years in Washington, I longed for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood." -- Fred Thompson here

“Why don’t we leave here today forgetting the word earmark?” -- Nancy Pelosi here

Whines Begin Over Couric's Ratings

CBS Evening News ratings hit a 20-year low recently. Now that's amazing, considering the low caliber of Dan Rather's work in his final years. So the whining has begun.

Rather says the news has been "dumbed down" and "tarted up" with the addition of Katie Couric.

CBS executive Moonves blames Katie's low ratings on sexism -- and declares Rather was sexist for the "tarted up" remark.

Hey! Guys! Stop blaming the consumer!

You are in a competitive business. If you don't deliver what people want, they won't watch. Blaming the consumer betrays your elitist attitude. When will you climb down off your high horse and realize you have nothing special -- news is a commodity in today's world.

Besides, why should I wait for your arrogant pronouncements and warped coverage when I can proactively gather the news from several sources via the Internet long before your tired newscast?

Oh, yeah -- and when I watch news programs, I favor Fox. (Now you have something else to whine about!)

Fight Terrorism With Global Warming

Here's a thought -- fight Islamic terrorism with global warming.

Let's face it, the terrorists are already in some pretty hot and barren lands. A little global warming may just fry them in place. I mean, if we can take action to reduce global warming, surely we can take action to raise global temperatures.

Let's look the Iranian loony in the eye and say, "Pipe down or fry!" They may shut off the oil, but we can turn up the heat.

If you ever popped ants with a magnifying glass as a kid -- and have a little imagination -- you can see the effectiveness of this weapon. Yes, we may have another American dust bowl for a few years, but it's a small price to pay for crisping terrorists in their caves!

What? We can't control global warming that way? We can't really raise temps? Then we can't really lower temps! Stop whining about the temperature and join the battle against the real threat -- Islamic jihadists.
