Will Bush Betray Us?

Will Bush push his immigration bill and betray us? I'm asking myself -- and the President. The following is an email I just sent to the White House:

Dear Mr. President,

Please quit pushing comprehensive immigration reform. I have supported you on most issues, but adamantly oppose this bill. Your duty is to the American citizen, not illegal aliens. Build the fence and forget amnesty. Our national security depends on it.

If you push this bill, I will consider it a betrayal -- especially if the measure fails to provide extensive screening to exclude terrorists, gang members and criminals -- that's how strongly I oppose it.

Gingrich Handicaps the Republicans in the Election

Newt Gingrich, in a recent speech, commented on the Republicans and the upcoming Presidential election. Ben Evans from the Associated Press is the source. This is a reformatting of his points:

Rudy

Pros

- Handled crime in NYC well
   - Handled 9/11 well
Cons
   - Social liberal
Bottom Line
In today's environment, his strong security credentials may outweigh the liberalism.

McCain

Cons

   - Position on immigration
   - Position on campaign finance reform
Bottom Line
Will have the toughest time winning the nomination

Thompson

Bottom Line

    - "Very formidable"

Romney

Bottom Line

   - "Very serious person who is working very hard"

Republicans in General

Bottom Line

Must realize government is broken and offer dramatic plans to change it

Fred Thompson Donated to Lieberman's Campaign

Watch Fred Thompson explain why he contributed to Joe Lieberman's campaign. (I don't think the conservatives will mind too much.)

What Do They Do With The Flags?

"What do the families of fallen soldiers do with the flags from the funeral?" I found myself wondering this as I watched this video. Then, as the sun set here, I wiped a tear and went to the porch to bring in the flag I hung this morning...feeling somber and thankful.

Memorial Day Should Unite Us

In 1866, residents of Columbus, Mississippi decorated the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Columbus was the first town in the South, and perhaps in the nation, to honor the fallen soldiers of both sides in our Civil War.

The custom of decorating graves of Confederate solders was widespread in the South. In fact, the Southern practice was the inspiration for General John Logan to call for a national observance to decorate the graves of Union dead. Yet Columbus, deep in the South, showed the true meaning of the day by decorating the graves of both sides.

Today, we are polarized by a war of values. Political battles rage over elections and issues. One issue dividing us is the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Despite our different convictions about the war, we must unite in our appreciation for our soldiers.

We live in a world where evil and aggression sometimes require war. So, the families of America send their sons and daughters to defend us and fight for freedom. Many of these families have paid the ultimate price.

I know the mother of a new recruit. What mixed emotions must flood her heart as her son prepares to become a Marine. I'm sure her prayers have been sharpened. She must feel pride in the noble motives of her son, and fear for his safety. She must hate war in a more personal way today, even while she reluctantly realizes it is sometimes necessary.

We also can hate war and still feel pride for soldiers willing to fight and die for us. Today, let's follow the example of the people of Columbus, Mississippi. Let us unite and remember with honor the men and women who have died defending our freedom.

Fred Thompson's Gearing Up

Fred Thompson continues to gear up for a run for President. He has installed a "campaign manager in waiting" and appointed his chief attorney. The old pickup may be headed out on the campaign trail soon!

Competing Interests of Immigration Reform

Examine the competing interests of each stakeholder in the immigration issue and you realize a few things. The following table generalizes broadly, but reflects the basic motivations of each group. Observations follow.

Who

What They Want

What They Do

Politicians

- Votes
- Loyalty of new voters

- deliver amnesty to illegals
- deliver path to citizenship to illegals
- promise security to citizens, but fail to deliver

Illegal Aliens

- to remain in U.S.
- economic opportunity

- break immigration laws

Employers

- cheap labor

- break employment laws

Legal Immigrants

- U.S. citizenship
- economic opportunity
- "keep their place in line"

- obey the immigration laws

Citizens

- control of border
- respect for laws
- opportunities for the disadvantaged

- vote

A Few Observations

Illegal aliens are often un-interested in assimilating into the American culture. They want to keep their culture and access the economic opportunities of the U.S.

Politicians don't want to control the border. If they did, they'd conduct hearings about the lack of a fence, why INS can't control things, etc.

Most citizens are not opposed to immigration. They simply want the laws observed and the border controlled.

Politicians who want votes are willing to alienate their current voters in a bid to gain the loyalty of new voters. Bottom line: unless they hear a scream from the current citizens in protest, they will deliver amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals and only promises for border control.

Huckabee Impressed Me

I was able to watch part of the Republican Presidential debate last night and Mike Huckabee impressed me.

Granted, most of the answers by most of the candidates were agreeable. But Huckabee was clear, concise and had wit. He seemed the most prepared, the most able to compose an answer, the most able to explain himself within the time allotted. He also had some good lines.

In contrast, McCain seemed awkwardly plodding -- and I got tired of his "I'm a leader" bit.

Giuliani seemed sincere, but had no style and was not as concise in his answers. I also don't agree with him on abortion -- Huckabee landed points against him here.

Romney -- well, it wasn't his answers. What was it? Let's just say he seemed slick. At times I wondered what was really behind his answers -- just impressions.

Thompson -- "duh." Might be time to fold, Tommy.

Tancredo -- I like his positions, but he just doesn't present them well enough to stay in this race. Shame. I doubt he will even be considered as a running mate.

Fred Thompson Puts Michael Moore In His Place

Michael Moore challenged Fred Thompson to a one-on-one debate after Thompson criticized the propagandist for going to Cuba to film a "documentary."

I find the prospect of the debate very interesting. But watching the video of Thompson's response shows it would be no contest -- Moore would look like a rude, arrogant brat against the cool, collected and witty Thompson.

Addition background here.

Pediatricians Call for End of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

The American College of Pediatricians has called for the end to embryonic stem cell research. The following is the entire text of the news release minus contact informaton:

The American College of Pediatricians (www.acpeds.org) calls for an end to embryonic stem cell research and recommends the exclusive support of already proven effective adult stem cell research. “Not only does embryonic research require taking the life of human embryos, it also prolongs needless suffering by delaying the development of more promising adult stem cell treatments and cures,” states Michelle Cretella, MD, Fellow of the American College of Pediatricians.

Research using non-embryo sources of stem cells, including amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood, placenta and adult blood, fat and various organs, have yielded impressive results.

Adult stem cells are now routinely used in certain forms of cancer therapy. Over the last decade, these cells have been used to successfully treat spinal cord injuries, heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and dozens of other conditions in human trials.

This has not been the case with any embryonic stem cell trial. Instead, there have been catastrophic results with these cells producing the wrong tissue, forming tumors and triggering immune rejection.

Every dollar spent on the failed and unnecessary process of embryonic stem cell research steals resources away from the established utility and potential of adult stem cell research. This is fiscally irresponsible and medically unconscionable.

Thompson Drops Another Hint -- and Some Red Meat

Fred Thompson dropped another hint about his intentions at a recent speech to the Council for National Policy. Emphasis is added:

"One thing about folks knowing you are going to speak at the Council for National Policy, you get lots of advice as to what to say. A lot of good advice. Good talking points. In fact enough for several speeches. Also, some of your friends, knowing that you are thinking about running for President, urge you to give a rousing campaign speech

Hopefully there will be an opportunity to do all of those things but tonight instead of all of that, I want to talk a little about what should be the origin of all those talking points."

It is a great speech with plenty of red meat for hungry conservatives! My favorite lines follow:

"We have always held our federal judiciary in high esteem, even at a time when most of our institutions are under assault. However, if judges continue to act like politicians they will get the respect currently given to politicians."

Speaking of Scooter Libby's case: "In our system all citizens are guaranteed equal protection. And when we appropriate unlimited resources and give unlimited power and direct it all toward one individual, there had better be extraordinary circumstances. There were none here. Just a case of public officials without the courage to do the right thing and stop this farce before it began. In no other prosecutor’s office in the country would a case like this one have been brought."

Would Dobbs Muzzle Dr. King?

Lou Dobbs vented about religious leaders speaking up on the immigration issue. He seems to think the so-called "separation of church and state" means religious leaders can't speak up on controversial topics, or on topics where they may be at odds with the American people.

So, would Lou have groused at Dr. Martin Luther King for speaking on the controversial issue of his day?

The "separation of church and state" may live in Lou's mind, but not in the Constitution. The religious leaders in this country have always been the conscience of the nation, albeit at times misinformed.

Here's more commentary on Lou's folly.

Rudy, How Can We Believe You?

Rudy Giuliani reaffirms his support for abortion rights but claims to be open to appoint an anti-abortion Supreme Court Justice. How can we trust him?

What evidence exists that Rudy is trustworthy? Would he really appoint an anti-abortion nominee? Are we to believe him simply because he's tough on crime?

Rudy claims his principle is to support the right for abortion, but he's open to restrict it. Why does he sound like a politician wheedling for votes? Like hearing the claims of a street hustler in NY, I'm on guard...
