Should Fred Thompson Stay Home?

Maybe Fred Thompson should stay out of the Presidential race. Chris Cillizza makes the case at washingtonpost.com. Here's a summary:

1. Fred's history shows a dislike of campaigning.
2. Fred doesn't have the organization to compete and may lack the ability to form an effective one.
3. After five years, Fred's political abilities are rusty.
4. Fred's been married twice.
5. Fred has made pro-abortion statements in the past, which will need to be explained.
6. Fred voted for campaign finance reform.
7. Fred's greatest advantage is star power -- which will end the moment he declares.

Be Judgmental!

Islamic terrorists are evil.  There, I said it. Can you say that our enemies are evil? Consider the following:
-----
The news report came about mid-week. Maybe you saw it.

The Associated Press reported that terrorists in Iraq have passed an unthinkable threshold: They used two children to disguise a car bomb.

The car was waved through a checkpoint by American soldiers who could not imagine that children would be in a car filled with explosives. When the terrorists got to their target, they got out of the car and ran. They left the children behind in the car, and then blew it up.

There is a word for people who put children in a car to be blown up. The word is evil.
...

It's important that we say this out loud and that we render this moral judgment. Because if we fail to understand that our enemy is evil, we have failed to understand what we are fighting.
-----
Read more. Then start using the word "evil" to describe the enemy.

Why Am I Not Surprised?

 From CNN.com:

"In her first public speech since announcing last Thursday that her breast cancer had returned, Elizabeth Edwards appealed Monday for more federal funding for health research of all kinds, including stem-cell research."

Why am I not surprised? The Left can't persuade people with reason. So they appeal to emotion by making a victim the spokesman. Then when someone challenges the reasoning of their position, the Left screams about the "mean-spirited, hate-filled" attacks on the  victim-spokesman.

It looks like Elizabeth Edwards will be cast in the victim-spokesman role made famous by Michael J. Fox in '06.

Hmmm...that didn't take long...

U.S. Attorney Firing Timeline

Confused about whether the firing of eight U.S. attorneys is a big scandal? I’ve created a timeline of quotes gleaned from news sources. My conclusions follow the timeline.

Early 2004
In fact, early in 2004, David Ayres, chief of staff to Gonzales's predecessor, John Ashcroft, began the process of evaluating U.S. attorneys, with the hopes of determining who were the "poorest" ones, "should we have an opportunity to make changes," according to a former Justice Department official. At the time, Ashcroft believed he would be asked to stay through Bush's second term.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070316/16ashcroft.htm

Early in 2005
Then White House counsel Harriet Miers told Gonzales's chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, that it might be good to fire all 93 U.S. attorneys and replace them with new picks. Sampson, Justice officials say, was not inclined to remove any of them unless they had served their full four-year term and also was opposed to a wholesale purge, remembering the outcry in 1993 when President Bill Clinton did exactly that, leading to enormous anger among Republicans in Congress.

But in the interest of the "betterment of the organization," Sampson agreed to begin an informal evaluation of U.S. attorneys. Indeed, over the next year, Sampson began to "consult" with senior officials in an attempt to identify the 10 worst U.S. attorneys who could conceivably be replaced.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070313/13ticktock.htm

Early 2006
Finally, a year after his initial conversation with Miers, Sampson wrote her an E-mail informing her that there were "practical obstacles to removing and replacing U.S. attorneys." Among them:

    "Significant disruption" to the work of the Justice Department;
Raising the ire of home-state senators, who have customarily been consulted on U.S. attorney
    appointments;
Finding good replacements and getting them through Senate confirmation.

However, he said none of the obstacles was "insuperable." He recommended removing a "limited" number of U.S. attorneys, "mitigating the shock to the system" that could result from an "across-the-board firing."

He pointed out that the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys could "work quietly with targeted U.S. attorneys to encourage them to leave government service voluntarily" as a "save face" measure.

May 10 2006
U.S. News has learned that on May 10, one day before Sampson's E-mail to the White House counsel's office, the U.S. attorney's office in San Diego alerted the Justice Department that the FBI would execute search warrants in two days for the No. 3 official at the CIA, Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, in connection with the spiraling corruption probe into former Republican Rep. Randall "Duke" Cunningham of California.

May 11, 2006
On May 11, 2006, Kyle Sampson, then chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, sent a confidential E-mail to the White House counsel's office regarding the "removal and replacement" of U.S. attorneys whose four-year terms had expired, including the U.S. attorney in San Diego, Carol Lam: "The real problem we have right now with Carol Lam," Sampson wrote, "that leads me to conclude that we should have someone ready to be nominated on 11/18, the day her 4-year term expires."
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070319/19gonzales.htm

November 2006
November 27, Gonzales attended an hour-long meeting on the firings with his then-chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, the man in charge of putting together a list of those to be dismissed.

According to the documents, in late November Sampson was still struggling with the task of determining which prosecutors would lose their jobs.

The list was finalized days after his meeting with Gonzales in the attorney general's conference room, and the seven attorneys were formally notified of their dismissals on December 7. An eighth attorney was fired earlier.

March 13, 2007
Comparing himself to a CEO of a big company, Gonzales said that he takes responsibility for the way the department fired the U.S. attorneys and how it explained its decisions. But while resorting to the long-favored "mistakes were made" tradition, Gonzales also distanced himself from the year-and-a-half-long process that resulted in the firings, even though his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, who just resigned, was intimately involved.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070313/13usattorneys.

The attorney general told reporters two weeks ago that the dismissals were an "effort that was led by Mr. Sampson" and that they "never had a discussion about where things stood."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070324/pl_afp/uscongresspolitics_070324165719

March 23, 2007
Contrary to his earlier assertions, US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales took part in a confidential meeting on firing seven US attorneys now at the center of a political controversy, documents released late Friday show.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070324/pl_afp/uscongresspolitics_070324165719

Conclusions
The selection of attorneys to fire had political motivations, though the process also began with a look at performance. This is not a crime. The selection and retention of U.S. attorneys has always had political considerations. Controversy has often surrounded their dismissal.

The process to select the U.S. attorneys to fire was lengthy – not a sudden house-cleaning. It also considered whether four-year terms had expired. It doesn’t look like a witch hunt.

Gonzalez’s statement on March 13 that he “never had a discussion” on the matter was wrong – whether he intentionally misled or had a memory failure. I doubt either is a crime.

The Democrats are fishing in a puddle – dancing around like they’ve hooked a “big one.” I predict a lot of politicians will be telling “fish stories” – lying about the size of the “catch.” They can create a political stink. But if the administration continues to refuse testimony under oath, they can’t even hope for a Scooter Libby-style process crime.

Expect a lot of accusations and hyperbole to extend as close to the '08 elections as possible. All the hot air they'll generate will not help global warming...

Secret Efforts to Form North American Union

The Security and Prosperity Partnership Is More Than Dialogue

WorldNetDaily used a Freedom of Information request to gain access to documents revealing efforts to integrate Mexico, Canada and the United States. Here's the lead on the article:
------
While the Bush administration insists the controversial Security and Prosperity Partnership is just a dialogue with Canada and Mexico, a State Department cable released to WND shows Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez pressing to implement major trilateral initiatives to help "capture the vision of North American integration."

The cable was among some 150 pages of State Department SPP documents recently released to WND under a Freedom of Information Act request.

This must be come a campaign issue!

The Sky Is Falling...Again

Fears of Global Warming Continue

Scientists continue to spread alarm about global warming. This from
The Daily Aztec at San Diego State University:

-----
Walter Oechel, Ph.D., put it bluntly to a standing-room only crowd at the Aztec Athletic Center Auditorium.

The question: Is the world beyond repair?

The answer: "Yes."
-----
Wow. The world is now beyond repair! What to do? Oechel suggested many things like carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse emissions.

Hmmm...let's see...the earth will warm and the seas will rise -- and the world is beyond repair! The only thing left to do is move North to higher ground! Land values in San Diego should plummet soon!

Hey, want to get in on the next tropical resort? I've got some great muskeg land in Alaska...

Thompson Gains in the Polls

Fred Thompson, who hasn't declared his candidacy for President, has tied Mitt Romney in an Ohio poll. In fact, Newt Gingrich is tied for third. Prospects are looking up for conservatives! From The New York Sun:

In a survey taken from March 13 to March 19, of 1,122 Ohio voters, both Messrs. Romney and Thompson get 6% of the vote among registered Republicans. Mayor Giuliani came in at 31%, Senator McCain of Arizona at 21%, and the former speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, at 8%.

Fred Thompson's Message to Mexico on Border Problem

Are you wondering what Fred Thompson thinks about immigration. The following is his message to the President of Mexico taken from an article at National Review Online (credits seem to indicate this was broadcast on the Paul Harvey Show.):

hey guys, you’re our friends and neighbors and we love you but it’s time you had a little dose of reality. A sovereign nation loses that status if it cannot secure its own borders and we are going to do whatever is necessary to do so, although our policies won’t be as harsh as yours are along your southern border. And criticizing the U.S. for alternately doing too much and too little to stop your illegal activities is not going to set too well with Americans of good will who are trying to figure a way out of the mess that your and our open borders policy has already created.

My friends, it’s also time for a little introspection. Since we all agree that improving Mexico’s economy will help with the illegal-immigration problem, you might want to consider your own left-of -center policies. For example, nationalized industries are not known for enhancing economic growth. Just a thought. But here’s something even more to the point that you might want to think about: What does it say about the leadership of a country when that country’s economy and politics are dependent upon the exportation of its own citizens?

Satan Renounces Gingrich

Here's a boost for the Gingrich campaign (and a bit of fun): Satan no longer endorses Newt Gingrich! This according to the Borowitz Report in The Columbus Dispatch.

So, let's see... what do Satan and liberals have in common? Neither supports Newt! (Though, there may be more...)

I also find it odd this broke in an Ohio paper. I was sure papers on both coasts were closer to the dark prince!

Is Obama's Church Racist?

Asking the question "Is Obama's church racist?" seems controversial, but it is only the first of a series of questions. Barak Obama is a member of an activist church that is "unashamedly black" -- Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ.

Having no shame is good. Yet, is it racist to live by "black values" or pledge allegiance to "all black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System"?

I thought Christians lived by Christ's value system. I thought the Christian faith transcends racial boundaries. Wasn't Dr. King's dream a society which judged on the content of character, not race?

Here's the clue -- the church is more about liberal politics than traditional Christian teaching.
According to one news report, the church and/or the pastor have supported:

  • Opposition to the Iraq war
  • Gay rights
  • Palestinian causes
  • So, what exactly does Obama see in his church? What exactly does he believe?

DeLay Blasts Newt in New Book

Tom DeLay calls Newt Gingrich an ineffective leader in his new book. From CBS:

"He knew nothing about running meetings and nothing about driving an agenda," DeLay wrote. "Nearly every other day he had a new agenda, a new direction he wanted us to take. It was impossible to follow him."

Newt has responded. This from The San Francisco Chronicle:

DeLay credits Gingrich as having a gift for politics, but he is dismissive and calls Gingrich an "ineffective speaker of the House."

The comments have drawn the attention of Gingrich, who is considering a presidential bid. In an interview, Gingrich listed a series of accomplishments during his reign in the House, including the first tax cuts in 16 years, welfare changes, institutional improvements, a balanced budget, increased intelligence spending and the holding of a majority after the ousting of the entrenched Democrats.

"What I would say is take that list of accomplishments, and you can then ask DeLay what the comparable accomplishments were after I left," Gingrich said.

    Hmmm, Newt has a point.

Democrats Take Pot Shot at Thompson

Fred Dalton Thompson, former U.S. Senator and current actor on Law and Order, is considering a run for President. The Democrats have taken a pot shot in his direction concerning voter registration. From The Chattanoogan:

Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Gray Sasser said, "As Sen. Thompson considers whether or not he should run for president, he also should consider whether or not he should register to vote in Tennessee.

"While we do not normally make it a practice to recruit more Republican voters to Tennessee, we would welcome Senator Thompson rejoining the roles of registered voters in the Volunteer State."

He added, "After reviewing the state's voter file and consulting with state officials, it does not appear that Fred Dalton Thompson is a registered voter in the state of Tennessee.
